Missing school for Rosh Hashanah

Missing school and work on the holiest days of the Jewish year is a powerful way to demonstrate the timeless value of our ancient faith. Fortunately, this year Yom Kippur falls on Shabbat and there is no need to miss school in order to participate fully. However, Rosh Hashanah does come midweek this year. Rabbi Danan would like to encourage and support all of our families with school aged children and teens to join their Jewish peers throughout the country in taking Rosh Hashanah off from school. We will have childcare and children’s services on the first day of Rosh Hashanah.

State law permits our students to miss school for religious reasons, and the Chico Unified School District Attendance Policy explicitly states that they may miss school because of “observance obligations of a student's religion.” Parents should provide a note or phone call explaining the reason for the absence.
