Get ready for the Jewish New Year and the Days of Awe/High Holiday season with a Mishpachot* Rosh Hashana (New Year’s) Potluck at the Millers this Sunday, September 21 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

We will:

- Make sure our apple-and-honey-eating skills are still intact

- Brush up on our shofar blowing

- Make Rosh Hashana (New Year’s) cards

- Read books, sing songs, and possibly make (or at least eat) some honey cake!

Rabbi Julie will join us to help us learn the holiday blessings, explain the shofar calls, tell stories, and provide us with holiday handouts from "The Mother's Circle," a project of the "Jewish Outreach Institute" (JOI). She will also give a book about the Jewish holidays to anyone who hasn't received one yet.

Please RSVP to amy.sanger.miller@gmail.com so we can plan accordingly. If you are able to make it, please bring a dairy/vegetarian dish to share.

Also don't forget to mark your calendars for these upcoming family-friendly events (see attached document for additional details):

--Wednesday, September 24, and Thursday, September 25 - Rosh Hashanah

--Saturday, October 4 - Yom Kippur

--Sunday, October 12, 4-7pm - Sukkot celebration in the CBI sukkah - free kosher barbeque (chicken & veggie burger options), live music, dancing & a family activity for the kids at 4:00pm

* Mishpachot is the Hebrew word for “families,” used here to refer to families with kids aged 13 and younger living in the Chico/Northstate area, who in some way identify as Jewish or are simply interested in learning more about Judaism and being Jewish. Menchkins, who are the youngest members of the local and diverse Jewish community (from birth through kindergarten), have previously met separately for many holidays and events, though the numbers for this age group are so small at the moment that most activities planned for the upcoming year are likely to be inclusive of all families with pre-Bar/Bat Mitzvah kids - thus the new “group name." Events for this larger Mishpachot group will be held several times during the year and will typically focus on a Jewish holiday or theme. As they were for the Menchkins, the events planned for this group will continue to be informal, playful, and full of songs, hands-on activities, and exploration of the Jewish world. These activities are always open to older siblings and any other youngsters or young-at-heart who want to join in. If you know others who might be interested in participating in Mishpachot events, please contact Amy Miller so she may contact them and include them in future communications.
