We have many mitzvah opportunities for Tikkun Olam in our local community! CBI members are very busy assisting people without housing - providing food, staffing shelters and collecting personal items. We are are giving Chico's non-Jewish Volunteers a break by serving meals on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day at the Torres Shelter and at the Safe Space Winter Sheltering Program. Don't delay, teams may fill up quickly. Here's how you can participate :

  • December 21, 2014: Chanukah Collection Campaign at the Chanukah Party, 5:00 p.m. at CBI. Please bring any of the following items to CBI:

  • For 6th Street Drop-In Center for Homeless Teens: Tooth brushes/toothpaste; deodorant; sewing kits; shampoo/conditioner/lotion; razors/shaving cream; feminine products; Chapstick; hand sanitizer; socks; make-up kits;wallets; playing cards; flashlights; art sets.

  • For Shalom Free Clinic Thrift Store clients: Blankets; sleeping bags; socks; gloves; Chapstick/Carmex; Children's diapers (any size); easy to warm up Noodle Soup/ Cup o'Soup.

  • December 24, 2014: CBI members will be preparing & serving dinner at the Torres Shelter. Contact Loretta Steinke 530-518-2825 to volunteer to serve.

  • December 24 & 25, 2014: At the Safe Space host church, CBI members will be preparing and serving a light meal for 40 at 7:00 p.m. at the Unitarian Church. Safe Space provides winter sheltering for people without homes who are not served by other shelters. This project prevents people from dying of hypothermia. At least 20 volunteers are needed each night to check people in, drive them to the host church, assist, prepare & serve meals; pass out mats & sleeping bags, do laundry, stay overnight, and reverse the process in the morning. Please consider joining CBI members to support this life-saving project. Contact: Nitsa Schiffman 530-343-7108 Carol Edelman 530-864-8947 to help prepare and serve evening meals on 12/24 & 25/ 2014. Nancy Evens 530-591-7394 to volunteer in any of the staff positions.
